Navy women tighten defense, pull away over Morgan, 80-47

Navy women's coach Tom Marryott delivered a very simple halftime message last night - play better defense.

The Midshipmen let Morgan State find too many open shots in a close first half, but that changed after Marryott's halftime words. Navy held the Bears to only six second-half baskets and ran away with an 80-47 victory at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.

Morgan State (0-3) shot 52 percent in the first half and stayed close despite committing 20 turnovers. Navy (2-1) looked flat and held just a 39-30 lead at the break, and Marryott made his message very clear during halftime.

"We just had to fire up the intensity," Marryott said. "We had to turn up the heat. That was the focus at halftime."

Adrienne Roseti scored eight of her game-high 20 points in the second half, and teammate Courtney Davidson added 12 of her 16. Nikki Curtis came off the bench to tie a career high with 11 points, all in the first half. The Navy offense ran smoother in the second half and combined with a much tougher effort on defense to shut down Morgan State.

The Midshipmen started the second half with a 17-2 run as the Bears missed 17 of their first 18 shots. Morgan State couldn't find the wide-open shots any more, and its impatience on offense proved costly. The Bears made just six of 32 from the field (19 percent) as Navy easily pulled away.

"He really focused on defense at [halftime]," Roseti said. "That was our goal, to work on our defense."

The Bears are a very young team -- with four freshmen and only one senior -- and their frustration showed in the second half. Morgan State went just 1-29 last season, and this was another learning experience.

"We can't put all the pieces together," Morgan State coach Angelyne Brown said. "We haven't been able to do it all year."

Morgan State heads for Alaska and a tournament starting Friday. Navy must travel to Hawaii today for the 25th Rainbow Wahine Classic and a meeting with No. 2 Texas on Friday.
