Workshop is to help the disabled prepare for emergencies

A workshop on "Emergency Preparedness Planning for Individuals with Disabilities," sponsored by the Community Emergency Response Network of Howard County is planned from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Columbia Sheraton Hotel.

The free workshop is designed for disability service provider administrators and emergency planning staff for organizations serving people with disabilities in Howard County. The network's mission is to facilitate the development of a community-based disaster-response plan for the county to ensure optimum preparedness in the event of a terrorist attack. The network supports the county government's disaster planning.

Hospital auxiliary to hold three-day book sale in Dec.

The Howard County General Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary will sponsor a book sale from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 3, 4 and 5.

New books and gifts will be on sale in the hospital's main lobby, 5755 Cedar Lane, Columbia. Proceeds will benefit the hospital expansion program.

Sponsors for needy sought for the coming holidays

Mike Clark of Christ Church Link, an information and referral service, seeks individuals or organizations to sponsor needy Howard County families for the holidays.

The Link provides referrals to agencies that help prevent evictions and utility turnoffs, provide food and assist with employment and other needs.

Soroptimist International seeks award applications

Soroptimist International of Howard County is accepting applications for the organization's Violet Richardson and Women's Opportunity awards.

The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young female volunteers.

The Women's Opportunity Award helps support women who, as heads of households, must enter the workforce to support themselves and their families.

Soroptimist International of Howard County is part of an international organization for women in management and the professions that works to advance human rights and the status of women.

Mothers & More chapter looking for new members

The Southwest Baltimore chapter of Mothers & More seeks new members.

Mothers & More is a national support group dedicated to the needs and interests of women during their active parent years.

Meetings are held Wednesday evenings, twice a month, in the Catonsville-Howard County area.

Applications accepted for home-repair help

Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April Howard County/Sukkot in April Howard County is accepting applications from homeowners who need assistance with home repairs and maintenance projects.

Homeowners who are elderly, disabled or are otherwise disadvantaged are invited to apply for assistance. The program, which uses volunteers, is designed to help residents live with independence and dignity.
