The student: Arelle Oberlander, 17

School: Mount Hebron High

Special achievement: As a singer, she participated in the All-Eastern Music Festival in Providence, R.I. "All-Eastern is not something you can audition for expressly," she said. Student musicians from 13 East Coast states are invited to attend based on high audition scores for All-State choirs and orchestras.

What was the festival like? "Once you're accepted, they send you your music and you learn it on your own, independently, and then you all meet. I think it was 300 kids." Students gathered to rehearse for three days before their performance. "It was definitely an amazing experience to go and be with people who can pick up things really quickly and work hard."

What she likes about singing? She started studying voice two years ago, after taking piano lessons for eight years and flute for three. "It was one of those things, when I started doing it, I knew that I loved it. Singing is just my favorite right now. Who knows what it will be a couple of years in the future?"

Other activities: She is active in the school's drama program and played Maria in West Side Story last spring. "That was my first big lead. I loved it. ... The music is breathtaking and the story line is so dramatic." This month, she played Anna in the school's performance of The King and I. She also has attended the Interlochen Camp for the Arts in Michigan on three occasions.
