A 20-year-old man was fatally shot yesterday afternoon less than a block from his home in West Baltimore's Garwyn Oaks area - the 234th homicide victim in the city this year, police said.

James Stokes had left his home in the 2300 block of Allendale Road about 12:30 p.m. and was walking in the 2300 block of Chelsea Terrace when a man stepped from a car and shot him in the head, said Detective Chris Jones.

Stokes, who lived with an aunt, died later at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Also yesterday, police released the names of two people who were fatally shot over the weekend in unsolved, and unrelated, slayings. They are:

Charles Williams, 17, of the 2400 block of W. Lafayette Ave., who was shot Saturday night in the 1500 block of Braddish Ave. and died Sunday at Shock Trauma.

Robert Saunders, 24, of the 300 block of N. Hilton St., who was shot several times early Saturday as he walked in the first block of S. Caton Ave. and also died at Shock Trauma.

Police had made no arrests in the three slayings, and urged anyone with information about them to call homicide detectives at 410-396-2100.
