Claire Marie Baechle, 98, company head paymaster

Claire Marie Baechle, former head paymaster at Martin Marietta Corp., died of complications from dementia Wednesday at a retirement facility in Amherst, Ohio. She was 98.

Miss Baechle was born and raised in Norwalk, Ohio, and was a 1923 graduate of Villa Angela Parochial School in Cleveland.

She began her career in 1923 as a clerical worker for the former Glenn L. Martin Co., then based in Cleveland, and moved to Baltimore in 1929 when the company moved its operations to Middle River. At her retirement in 1969, she was the company's head paymaster.

Miss Baechle lived for many years in the Charles Apartments in North Baltimore, where she maintained a rooftop garden. Since 1989, she had lived in Amherst.

She was a longtime volunteer at Union Memorial Hospital and enjoyed bird-watching, reading and traveling.

Graveside services will be held at noon Saturday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Cemetery in Norwalk.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
