Johns Hopkins freshman forward Julie Miller posted team highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds in her first collegiate game to lead the Blue Jays to a 75-66 victory over Widener in the first semifinal of the Blue Jay Invitational yesterday at Goldfarb Gymnasium.

The Blue Jays didn't trail in the first half but fell behind with 6:48 left in the second after the Pioneers (0-1) erased a six-point deficit. But Hopkins guard Alissa Burkholder hit a three-pointer to give the Blue Jays a 59-57 lead, and Hopkins was able to pull away.

Pennsylvania 54, UMBC 37: The Quakers never trailed in handing the host Retrievers a season-opening loss in the first round of the Retriever Invitational.

Murray State 66, Morgan State 42: The Racers (1-1) held the Lady Bears (0-2) to 10 points in the first half and went on to win the consolation game of the Fifth Third MU Classic in Huntington, W.Va.

Memphis 89, UMES 63: Reserve guard Victoria Crawford had 18 of her game-high 23 points in the first half as the host Tigers opened their season with a win over the Lady Hawks (0-1). Memphis forced 32 turnovers and held the Lady Hawks to 31 percent shooting.

King's College 87, Salisbury 78: The Sea Gulls (0-2) fell in the consolation round of the Marymount Tip-off Classic in Arlington, Va., despite trimming a 21-point second-half deficit to five points with 1:27 to play.

Washington College 83, Chestnut Hill 68: Liz Smith tallied game highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds, and Katie Piringer scored her 1,000th career point as the Shorewomen (1-1) defeated the Griffins (0-2) in the consolation game of the Cabrini College Tip-off Tournament in Radnor, Pa.

College of Notre Dame 56, Hollins 53: Monica Cherry and Julia Bachman hit game-sealing free throws in the closing seconds to help the Gators (2-0) top Hollins (1-1) in the championship game of the Women's Colleges Tip-Off Tournament at Notre Dame.

Hood 86, Villa Julie 41: The Blazers (1-1) raced to a 48-19 lead en route to their win over the Mustangs (0-2) in the consolation game of the Wesley Tip-off Tournament in Dover, Del.

Dickinson 58, St. Mary's 56: A 48-21 edge in rebounds helped the Red Devils (1-1) slip past the Seahawks (0-2) in the third-place game of the Holiday Inn Invitational in Glassboro, N.J.

Wisconsin-Platteville 64, Goucher 31: The Gophers' bid for their first 2-0 start since 1999-2000 was derailed by the Pioneers (1-1) on the second day of the Coca-Cola Tip-off Classic in Ashland, Va.

Thomas More 64, Frostburg State 52: A 27-10 run to start the second half sparked the Saints (2-0) to the championship of the Wilmington Inn Tip-off Tournament in Wilmington, Ohio. The Bobcats fell to 1-1.
