Santa's parade, children's characters at Carrolltown

Carrolltown Center in Eldersburg is celebrating the season with activities, starting with Santa's arrival Saturday.

Santa's parade will begin at noon Saturday at Kmart. A horse-drawn sleigh will carry him around the mall followed by characters such as Corduroy, Clifford, the Cat in the Hat, Bunky from Fun Quarters, Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer and street performers.

Santa will be available for photos from noon to 6 p.m. Dec. 6, 13 and 20, and noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 24 in the Winter Wonderland Gazebo. Photos cost $5, with proceeds going to the Freedom District Lioness Club.

A Breakfast with Santa, Pig a Pancake and Clifford will be held at 9 a.m. Dec. 13 in the food court. The cost is $5 and includes a photo with Santa, breakfast and goody bag. Reservations are required.

Sykesville Tae Kwon Do, Fun Quarters and Little Professor Book Center will have forms for a drawing for three gift baskets filled with products and gift certificates from mall merchants.

Holiday shopping hours at TownMall of Westminster

TownMall of Westminster continues its holiday events and shopping promotions with:

Joyous Voices strolling entertainment from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

Mall hours for holiday shopping will be 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 6 and 13; noon to 6 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 7; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 1 to 5.

Emergency preparedness presentation Dec. 5

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, Health Department and American Red Cross will present "Are you ready? Emergency Preparedness Seminar for Business" Dec. 5 at Best Western Westminster Catering & Conference Center.

The seminar will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $49 per person and includes a copy of "Emergency Management Guide for Business & Industry: A Step-By-Step Approach to Emergency Planning, Response and Recovery for Companies of All Sizes."

Donald Lumpkins, state anti-terrorism officer and director, Domestic Preparedness Division of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, will discuss the importance of having a plan.

Kevin Burr from the Red Cross will explain how to prepare a plan for a business. Maryland state Del. Sally Y. Jameson, a Democrat from District 28, will describe the effects of the tornado that ripped through La Plata's business district and what the community learned.

Reservation deadline is Wednesday.

New UPS Store opens in Route 140 shopping center

Jason and Bobbie-Jo Phelps have opened the UPS Store at 9 Westminster Shopping Center on Route 140 at Englar Road.

The store will offer UPS, packaging, mailbox, copying and document finishing and business services, as well as packaging and moving supplies.

Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

New Windsor resident new union vice president

The Maryland Classified Employees Association recently elected Byron "B.J." Johnson of Carroll County as first vice president for the 15,000-member union.

The New Windsor resident is a public works inspector for the county.

Johnson has been a MCEA member for 11 years, serving on numerous committees and the board of directors. He also is active in the community in several veterans' and civic organizations.

United Way elects board chairman, members

United Way of Central Maryland recently elected a new board chairman and members for 2004.

Among the new board members is Mark Blacksten, the vice president of commercial lending for Westminster Union Bank.

Coldwell Banker announces top October sales agents

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage has announced its top Carroll County sales agents for October.

Eldersburg: Denise Khouri.

Hampstead: Douglas Johnson.

Mount Airy: Charlie Condon.

Westminster: Carol Stencil.
