Neighbor injured when mixed chemicals release vapor cloud

PASADENA -- A woman was injured Friday when a neighbor created a large vapor cloud while mixing chemicals for his pool, Anne Arundel County firefighters said.

David Coutura, of the 7900 block of Oak Point Court, was combining a chlorine powder with other chemicals in his laundry room about 4:20 p.m., said Lt. Frank Fennell of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. The ensuing cloud came out of Courtura's home and spread across a nearby meadow.

Firefighters could do little to contain the cloud, Fennell said, but warned nearby residents. One woman was treated for minor throat irritation and taken to North Arundel Hospital for testing, Fennell said. Courtura was not injured. The cloud dissipated about 6 p.m., Fennell said.
