It took a big fourth quarter for No. 4 South Carroll to find comfortable separation from hard-running North Hagerstown in last night's Class 2A West region final in Winfield.

But by game's end, standout senior quarterback T.J. Swanson had his typical staggering numbers and the Cavaliers had another impressive win, this one sending them to the state semifinals.

Swanson ran 23 times for 181 yards and three touchdowns and also threw for 143 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-26 win over the previously undefeated Hubs.

The Cavaliers improved to 11-1 as their season continues next weekend when they meet Aberdeen for a chance to play in the state title game.

Trailing 21-20 going into the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers scored touchdowns on five straight possessions to seal the game.

A 29-yard punt return from senior Chris Luette (two touchdown receptions) provided good field position to start one series. A sack and fumble recovery by senior defensive end Andrew Eisold helped on another. And a 3-yard touchdown run from Brad Mayr finished off one possession.

But it was mostly the work of Swanson, who has passed for 2,287 yards and 28 touchdowns this season and rushed for 793 yards and 15 touchdowns, that sent the Hubs (11-1) home with their first loss.

"Biggest win we've ever had," said South Carroll coach Gene Brown, whose Cavaliers are finding success in their first playoff appearance since 1988. "It's been the same thing every week - even better tonight. [Swanson] ran over them like a linebacker, and his running was more important than his throwing."

The Cavaliers defense had problems containing North Hagerstown running back Derrick Keith, who ran for 143 yards, scored once and set up two other touchdown runs by Bryan Slater.

South Carroll had all the answers from there - relying more on Swanson's legs than his arm to build a 48-20 lead.

"We knew coming into the second half that we were going to be able to run on them. We just stuck with it - running, running, running - with a pass here and there, and just a great emotional win," Swanson said.
