November 22, 2003|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Salisbury advanced to the Division III field hockey championship for the first time since 1986 with a 1-0 victory over College of New Jersey yesterday in Annville, Pa. Senior Lindsay Elliott redirected Erin Budd's shot in the 21st minute for the game's lone goal.

Salisbury, in its third final four in four years and first national title game since winning the tournament 17 years ago, will play top-ranked Middlebury in today's championship. Middlebury (19-0) won its semifinal yesterday over Cortland State, 2-1.

The Sea Gulls (19-1), ranked No. 2 in Division III, won their 10th straight game. They also exacted a measure of revenge against College of New Jersey (17-3), which handed them their only loss of the season.

The Sea Gulls outshot College of New Jersey, 14-2, and had 13 penalty corners to New Jersey's three. Salisbury goalkeeper Melissa Taylor made two saves in the victory. College of New Jersey goalkeeper Kristina Beyel stopped nine Sea Gulls shots to keep the game close.

Goal: S-L. Elliott. Assist: S-Budd. Saves: S-Taylor 2; CNJ-Beyel 9. Half: S, 1-0.
