Wildey, Sr., Rev. Dr. Donzel C.

On Saturday, November 15, 2003, REV. DR. DONZEL C. WILDEY, SR., age 85, passed away peacefully. He was born in Point Marion, PA on October 3, 1918. He was the youngest of six children of John H. and Bertha Wildey. After schooling in Point Marion, he attended Waynesburg College in Waynesburg, PA, and graduated from Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD. He then graduated from Westminster Seminary with a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree. He received his Master of Sacred Theology degree from Temple School of Theology, in Philadelphia, PA, and was granted an Honorary Doctor of Divinity by Wesley Seminary, Washington, DC. Rev. Wildey served pastorates in both the Peninsula-Delaware and Baltimore-Washington Conferences of the United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, and was named Pastor Emeritus at Peninsula-McCabe UMC, Wilmington, DE, in 1992. In addition he served 4 years as Director of Christian Education for the Peninsula Conference, 10 years as Director of the Maryland Council of Churches in Baltimore, MD, where he was an activate advocate of the Civil Rights Movement, and 4 years as Vice President of Development at Wesley Seminary, Washington, DC. He served on the Board of Trustees that was responsible for the establishment of the Methodist Country House, the first retirement facility of the Peninsula United Methodist Homes. He was a Chaplain with the rank of First Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific area. He was a 50-year member of the Delaware Masons, and served 1 year as Chaplain of the Delaware Consistory. Rev. Wildey is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ellen E. Renner Wildey, 3 children, D.L. Clayton Wildey, Jr. and wife Marjorie, of Baltimore, MD, Sue Ellen Wildey Osborn and husband Lawrence F., and Paul Lawrence Wildey and wife Mary Frances of Wilmington DE, 5 grandchildren, Michael and wife Patricia, David and wife Kathi, Ian and wife Amy, Ryan and Laura, and 2 great-grandchildren, Rachael and Ross, sister: Marie Mapel of Carmichaels, PA and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 20th at 11:00 am at Peninsula-McCabe UMC, 2200 Baynard Blvd., Wilmington, DE. Interment will be private.
