Mary K. O'Mara, 90, parochial school teacher

Mary K. O'Mara, a former parochial school teacher and 50-year Howard County resident, died of dementia Sunday at Charlestown Retirement Community. She was 90.

Born Mary Knight in Baltimore and raised in the city's Ten Hills neighborhood, she was a 1931 graduate of Mount DeSales Academy and earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1935 from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

That year, she married John C. O'Mara, longtime general manager of City Oldsmobile. From 1942 until 1991, when they moved to the Catonsville retirement community, Mrs. O'Mara and her husband lived on their 75-acre Sunny Side Farm near Marriottsville, where they raised cattle and horses. Her husband died in 1997.

From 1962 to 1966, Mrs. O'Mara was an English teacher at St. Agnes Parochial School in Catonsville.

She enjoyed horseback riding and was a member for many years of the Howard County Hunt Club. She was active in alumni affairs at Mount DeSales Academy.

Mrs. O'Mara was a communicant of St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today at Charlestown's Our Lady of the Angels Chapel, 715 Maiden Choice Lane.

Mrs. O'Mara is survived by four sons, Dr. John V. O'Mara of Ellicott City, Gerald K. O'Mara of Oxford, Charles J. O'Mara of Washington and James P. O'Mara of Atlanta; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Seal of Eldersburg; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Mary Jean Burke, died in 1981.
