Motorcyclist, 32, dies after collision with car

November 18, 2003

A Frederick man died Sunday afternoon after his motorcycle crashed into a car near the Englars Mill subdivision in Carroll County, state police said.

Robert Vernon Nicholls Jr., 32, of the 5600 block of Crestwood St. in Frederick was riding his 1999 Suzuki GSXR 750 west on Route 31 when he ran into the driver's side door of a car attempting to make a U-turn, authorities said.

According to the police report, Gordon Maurice Piscacek, 62, said he did not see Nicholls when he pulled his 2002 Honda Accord over to the shoulder and began the U-turn near Sams Creek Road. Piscacek lives in the 10900 block of Joyceton Drive in Largo.

Nicholls was treated at the scene by New Windsor emergency crews and was later pronounced dead at Carroll Hospital Center.

Nicholls was the only son of Robert Vernon Nicholls Sr. and Helga Nicholls, who was murdered last year. Helga Nicholls, a well-known caller to local radio talk shows, was fatally stabbed in her home by her former son-in-law. Last month, a Carroll County jury convicted Leon A. Costley Jr. of first-degree murder.

"We'd just started healing when this happened," said Kristina Costley, Robert Nicholls Jr.'s sister.

No charges have been filed. Police continue to investigate the accident.
