Laurence A. Tisch, 80, a self-made billionaire investor who took control of CBS in the face of a hostile takeover but whose tenure was marked by accusations that he had tarnished the network's reputation, died of cancer Saturday in New York.

Mr. Tisch was chief executive officer and chairman of the board of CBS Inc. from 1986 to 1995, a period when its nightly newscast fell to third place and it lost NFL football to the upstart Fox Network.
