November 15, 2003|By Bill Free

Albany (7-3) at Towson (5-5)

Site: Minnegan Field at Johnny Unitas Stadium

Time: 12:30 p.m.

Radio: WTMD (89.7 FM)

Series: Albany leads 2-1.

Last week: Towson def. Georgetown, 27-6; Albany def. Robert Morris, 27-7.

Outlook: A winning season is on the line for a Towson team that was led last week by CB Davon Telp, who needed 1:58 to return two interceptions for TDs. That broke a combined 12 school and conference records. Albany clinched a tie for the Northeast Conference title last week. The Great Danes are led by senior TB Gary Jones, who is fourth in Division I-AA in rushing with 138.4 yards a game, has 18 TDs this season and 41 in his career.

Johns Hopkins (8-1) at McDaniel (5-4)

Site: Bair Stadium, Westminster

Time: 1 p.m.

Radio: WTTR (1470 AM)

Series: Hopkins leads 41-35-5.

Last week: Johns Hopkins idle; McDaniel def. Bethany, 45-15.

Outlook: This has been a down year for McDaniel, which has been to the NCAA playoffs five of the past six years. But the Green Terror gets the Centennial Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament if it can upset Hopkins, thanks to a victory over Muhlenberg Sept. 27. If the Jays win today, they share the Centennial crown with Muhlenberg, which would receive the automatic NCAA bid . Hopkins chases a third straight victory over McDaniel, led by RB Adam Cook, who is second in the Centennial in rushing with 102.2 yards a game, QB George Merrell, who has thrown a league-high 16 TD passes, and Brian Wolcott and Anthony Triplin, who have a combined 73 receptions for 1,015 yards and 13 TDs. JHU ranks first in Division III in pass efficiency defense, third in scoring defense (6.8 points a game) and ninth in total defense (228.8 yards a game). McDaniel counters mostly with the outstanding scrambling ability of freshman QB Brad Baer.

Salisbury (7-1) vs. Frostburg State (3-5)

Site: Johnny Unitas Stadium

Time: 7 p.m.

Radio: WICO (1320 AM)

Series: Tied 15-15.

Last week: Salisbury lost to Shenandoah, 23-22; Frostburg lost to Waynesburg, Pa., 28-7.

Outlook: QB Dustin Johnson leads Salisbury with 72.0 yards rushing a game and RB Rishawd Watson is right behind with 71.6. Salisbury averages 33.9 points a game and allows 12.6 . Sea Gulls LB Brad DeHaven tops the team in tackles with 62 and leads Division III in tackles for losses, 20 for 94 yards. Frostburg's Grant Burrough has thrown for 1,416 yards and 10 TDs, with his favorite targets being Adam Snyder (31 receptions for 324 yards) and Jason McLaughlin (29 catches for 287 yards). Junior DE Kevin Culbert leads the defense with 71 tackles, including 17 for losses of 117 yards. The teams (2-0 in league) will be playing for the Atlantic Central Football Conference title.
