Joseph R. Barnes, 76, longshoreman

Joseph R. Barnes, a retired longshoreman, died of cancer Sunday at his Woodmoor home. He was 76.

Mr. Barnes was born and raised in Walstonburg, N.C. After leaving school, he moved to Baltimore in 1945 and was a longshoreman until retiring in 1987. He was a member of International Longshoremen's Association Locals 1429 and 333.

He was an Orioles fan and a storyteller who family members said could come up with amusing and informative stories on any subject.

Mr. Barnes was a member of Mount Olivet Freewill Baptist Church, 290 N. Freemont Ave., where services will be held at 11 a.m. today.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, the former Ella R. Evans, a Baltimore County substitute teacher; four sons, Kelly L. Evans of Grifton, N.C., and Alan R. Barnes, Joseph R. Barnes Jr. and Steven R. Barnes, all of Baltimore; two daughters, Michelle R. Ford of Woodlawn and Tiffany Barnes of Catonsville; a sister, Katie Hall of Baltimore; and eight grandchildren.
