Shake You Down, third in the Breeders' Cup Sprint, heads a field of 10 entered yesterday in the $300,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash.

The Grade I stakes, one of only three top-rated stakes in Maryland, will be contested Saturday at Laurel Park.

As the final race of a 10-race card, the De Francis Dash will culminate the Fall Festival of Racing, a collection of six stakes worth $725,000.

The afternoon of racing will also include exhibits by area organizations, as well as Jack Russell terrier races, children's activities and an appearance by the Washington Redskins' cheerleaders.

Frank Carulli, the Maryland Jockey Club oddsmaker, tabbed Shake You Down the 4-5 favorite in the six-furlong sprint. It's rare for the morning-line favorite in a 10-horse stakes to be lower than even money.

"He's done the most; he's got the best speed figures," Carulli said. "There's just a big drop-off between him and the next horse."

Shake You Down is the only De Francis Dash entrant who competed Oct. 25 in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita Park. The Sprint is the nation's premier race for its speediest horses.

Mike Luzzi, who won the Eclipse Award in 1989 as top apprentice jockey while based in Maryland, will ride Shake You Down.

Luzzi is now based in New York. Fellow New York jockeys Edgar Prado and Jorge Chavez also will ride Saturday at Laurel.

The five stakes preceding the De Francis Dash will feature intriguing horses, including Forest Music in the $100,000 Selima Stakes and Toccet in the $50,000 Hail Emperor Stakes.

Like Shake You Down, both competed in the recent Breeders' Cup.

However, Forest Music, who finished 14th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, will probably be scratched from the Selima, a race of 1 1/16 miles.

Mark Shuman, trainer of the highly regarded 2-year-old, said she will likely run in a six-furlong stakes later this month in New York.
