ACE Awards honor individuals, businesses and organizations

The Howard County Chamber of Commerce has announced the honorees for its 2003 Acknowledgement of Chamber Excellence (ACE) Awards.

The awards recognize outstanding businesses and individuals for their commitment to the business community and support of the chamber.

Business Person of the Year is Ronald S. Schimel of Miles & Stockbridge P.C.

Business of the Year is the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Small Business of the Year is Eggspectation.

Nonprofit Business of the Year is the Howard County Public Library.

Beverly Roberts of Roberts Organizational Services Inc. received the Chairman's Award for Volunteer Service.

The honorees were recognized at an event held in their honor last month at Turf Valley Resort & Conference Center in Ellicott City.

Wal-Mart getting help in recruiting for new store

The Maryland Job Service, a Division of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, and the Howard County One-Stop Employment Center are assisting Wal-Mart in recruiting employees for its new Columbia store.

The company plans to hire more than 300 employees. Full- and part-time positions with flexible hours are available.

Recruiters are available to talk with applicants form 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and Nov. 29, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 5.
