November 09, 2003

BIZtech 2003 Expo, Carroll County's Business and Technology Expo, will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Carroll Community College in Westminster.

The expo will feature a business and technology trade show, technical seminars and a keynote speech by Alan Elkin of Advance Business Systems.

Elkin and his wife, Lois, opened their business in 1964 with 1,200 square feet of retail space. This year, the company was honored as Small Business of the Year (51 to 200 employees) by the Maryland Chamber of Commerce. Advance Business Systems sells business equipment and document management systems.

Local businesses will be provided with educational seminars, industry updates, and an opportunity to meet top business and technical vendors.

Seminars will cover a range of technical issues and software, including remote computer access, unified messaging, Microsoft Office software and MS Outlook software, and marketing products and services using technology. Seminars will be presented by technical experts and trainers.

Other highlights will include a robotics demonstration by General Dynamics and a free computer giveaway.

The robotics demonstration will feature the exterior Mobile Detection Assessment and Response System robot, which uses two radar systems, a laser scanner and stereo imaging capable of remote patrol and detection of intruders in commercial buildings and warehouses.

The master of ceremonies will be local tech personality Mario Armstrong of the technical television show Digital Spin on WMAR-TV.

The third annual event is co-sponsored by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, Carroll County Community College and the Carroll Technology Council.

Registration is free if made in advance, or $25 at the door.
