BRAVES: Announced 1B Robert Fick cleared unconditional release waivers.

BREWERS: Signed IF Trent Durrington to minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

CARDINALS: Declined to exercise their 2004 contract option on P Mike DeJean.

CUBS: Exercised 2004 contract option on P Matt Clement, worth $6 million.

MARINERS: Named Bill Bavasi general manager and executive vice president.

MARLINS: Announced that bullpen coach Jeff Cox, bench coach Doug Davis, first base and infield coach Perry Hill, pitching coach Wayne Rosenthal, hitting coach Bill Robinson and bullpen coordinator Pierre Arsenault will return for the 2004 season.

ORIOLES: Named Lee Mazzilli manager and signed him to two-year contract with two option years.

REDS: Announced P Seth Etherton refused an outright assignment to the minor leagues and elected free agency.

RED SOX: Exercised their 2004 contract option on P Derek Lowe, worth $4.5 million. Received permission from Angels to speak with bench coach Joe Maddon about manager opening.

WHITE SOX: Named Joey Cora third base coach.

NBA: Suspended Rockets F Maurice Taylor for minimum of 10 games for violating league's anti-drug program.

BULLS: Activated G Kirk Hinrich and F Linton Johnson. Placed F Marcus Fizer (inflamed right knee) and G Roger Mason Jr. (strained left groin) on injured list.

HEAT: Signed free-agent F Tyrone Hill. Released G Kirk Penney. Activated F Caron Butler. Placed F Malik Allen on injured list with bone spur in his right foot.

MAGIC: Activated F Pat Garrity and G Keith Bogans. Placed F Britton Johnson on injured list with left knee patella tendinitis. Placed G-F Gordon Giricek on injured list with strained right arch.

MOUNT ST. MARY'S: Northeast Conference named women's soccer senior Keli Stevens (Sparrows Point) to All-Conference first team. Announced that women's soccer G Naomi Campano was named to Academic All-District II first team.

TOWSON: Colonial Athletic Association named junior F Julie Lambi second-team All-Conference field hockey team.

UMBC: America East named following to women's soccer All-Conference second team: Freshman D Mary Hearin and sophomore G Robin Babaris; senior D Carolynn Patton received honorable mention; Hearin was also named to All-Rookie team, along with Amanda DiCarlo. America East named junior D Cecile Banas to field hockey All-Conference second team.

WASHINGTON: Agreed to terms with athletic director Barbara Hedges on nine-month contract.

PATRIOTS: Placed WR David Patten on injured reserve after knee surgery. Waived S Shawn Mayer.

NHL: Suspended Blues F Doug Weight for four games, without pay, as result of cross-checking incident in game Thursday against Canucks.
