Oakland Mills is 28 minutes away from winning a record 16th regional championship.

The Scorpions were leading Catoctin of Frederick County 2-0 yesterday in a game that was suspended by the referees 28 minutes early because of severe thunderstorms.

No. 2-ranked Oakland Mills, which has a record 12 state titles, will resume play with Catoctin at 3 p.m. today at Oakland Mills. The winner will then play Pocomoke on Saturday at South River.

The Scorpions (11-1), who have won four of the past five Class 1A state titles, lost to Pocomoke in the 2001 state final.

State regulations say that a suspended game will be continued unless it is declared a complete game by both coaches.

Catoctin coach Gary Kubala said his team intends to finish. "We are going to come back and play, depending on the weather and bus availability. We want to finish," he said late last night.

Catoctin will be down a player after receiving a red card in the 36th minute.

"This has been a total nightmare," said Kubala immediately after play was halted. His Cougars were nearly stranded in Catoctin when their bus failed to show up. The team had to travel to Oakland Mills in cars. "We didn't leave until 2."

Oakland Mills didn't exactly roll out the welcome mat for Catoctin (4-8-2). The Scorpions scored in the second minute when Saah Johnson controlled a cross from David Price and right-footed a low, well-placed shot from the left side.

It was Johnson's 19th goal of the season. The senior striker has scored in all but two Oakland Mills games.

The Scorpions scored again in the 28th minute when left halfback A.J. Johnson controlled a cross from Alex Douyon on the left side and hit a right-footed shot inside the near post from 6 yards. It was the first goal of Johnson's career.

Oakland Mills goalkeeper Dan Rogers, who has allowed just one goal all season, was hoping to record his 10th shutout.

NOTE: The Class 2A regional championship games featuring the Atholton and Glenelg girls and the Atholton and Glenelg boys were postponed until today. The girls will play at 5 p.m. and the boys at 7 at Howard.
