Fire department to conduct drill near mall today

The Howard County Department of Fire & Rescue Services will conduct an exercise from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at 5585 Wincopin Circle, the former Bennigan's building across from The Mall in Columbia.

The department's Special Operations team will respond to a simulated suicide-bombing incident with multiple casualties and a partial building collapse. Team members will use equipment to detect the presence of weapons of mass destruction, and will practice decontamination of victims and rescuers.

Expenses for the drill will be paid through a grant from the Department of Homeland Security and administered by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency.

Talk on designing homes for elderly set for today

The Howard County Office on Aging and the Homes for Life Coalition of Howard County will sponsor a meeting with Councilman Christopher J. Merdon and other community leaders on designing or remodeling homes to allow welcoming access to the main living area for elderly or disabled visitors and residents with changing needs.

The meeting will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today in the fifth-floor executive conference room of the Columbia Gateway Building, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Columbia.

Information session slated for HCC scholars program

Howard Community College will hold an information session about its James W. Rouse Scholars Program at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the college's Smith Theatre, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

The selective honors and leadership program, named in honor of Columbia's founder, is designed for students to transfer to four-year colleges and universities at the end of their sophomore year. Rouse students receive honors course work and have opportunities to develop leadership skills, participate in projects with community mentors, cultural and recreational activities and international travel.

The college is holding a series of high school information nights for prospective students and their parents. The final fall session will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in multipurpose Room 100 of the new Instructional Lab Building.
