Health Department offers inspections of child safety seats

The county Health Department offers year-round child car-safety seat inspections at three locations:

Brooklyn Park Health Center, 300 Hammonds Lane, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the third Thursday of the month. By appointment only. 410-222-6620.

Odenton Health Center, 1370 Odenton Road, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. the second Thursday and fourth Tuesday of the month. No appointment required. 410-222-6660.

Parole Health Center, 1950 Drew St., Annapolis, 9 a.m. to noon, the first and third Tuesday of the month. By appointment only. 410-222-7249.

In recent inspections, 85 percent of child seats were found to be improperly installed.

Hospital expands hours for blood donations

Anne Arundel Medical Center is seeking donors to help ease a blood shortage.

The medical center's Blood Donor Center has expanded its hours for donor appointments to:

Mondays, 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Tuesdays, 7:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., with evening hours by appointment.

Wednesdays, 7:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., with evening hours by appointment.

Thursdays, 7:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Fridays, 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

The donor center is on Level One of the Acute Care Pavilion, 2001 Medical Parkway. Information: 443-481-4215.

N. Arundel Hospital offers blood pressure screenings

North Arundel will offer blood pressure screenings at its Arundel Mills storefront, between entrance No. 4 and Jillian's:

Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Monday, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Nov. 11, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nov. 20, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nov. 24, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Nov. 25, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Crime avoidance training available from Red Cross

The Red Cross of Central Maryland offers "Crime Avoidance Training," a class that focuses on security awareness, tough-target strategies, safety on the move, using an automated teller machine safely and responding to threatening situations. Instructors will go to a facility, group or organization at a time that is convenient for the group. A minimum of 10 people is required. The cost is $9.95 per person.

AAMC offers yoga classes for beginners and experts

Anne Arundel Medical Center offers yoga instruction. Classes, unless noted, meet on the second floor of the Sajak Pavilion:

"Beginning Yoga," 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

"Continuing Yoga" (experience required), 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Class meets at 25 Shaw St., Annapolis.

"Yoga for Beginning and Advanced Students," 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

"Yoga Mid-Day" (beginning and advanced), 11 a.m. and noon Tuesdays and noon Wednesdays.

"Weekend Stretch" (beginning and advanced), 5 p.m. Fridays.

"Gentle Yoga," 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesdays.

"Yoga for the Young at Heart," for age 40 and older, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays.

"Yoga for Stress Management," 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Thursdays.

"Yoga for Weight Loss," 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays. The class meets at 25 Shaw St.

"Ashtanga, or Power Yoga" (yoga coupled with breathing exercises). Call for date and time.

"The Mix" (a combination of yoga and Pilates), 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays and 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. Saturdays.

Arthritis seminar:

Anne Arundel Medical Center will offer a free seminar, "The Top Ten Things to Do for Arthritis," from 11 a.m. to noon today in Room 250 of the center's Sajak Pavilion. Registration is required. 443-481-4000.

North Arundel Hospital will offer free foot screenings from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today, Nov. 11, 18 and 25 at the Arundel Mills storefront, between entrance No. 4 and Jillian's. 443-755-8773.

Diabetes lectures:

Lectures on diabetes will be offered at 6:30 p.m. today and Nov. 11 at the Leo and Lysbeth Courtney Conference Center in the Tate Center of North Arundel Hospital. Participants must be insulin-dependent diabetics (spouses are welcome). Dinner will be served. Registration is required. 410-787-4367.

Pain management seminar:

Anne Arundel Medical Center will offer a free pain management seminar from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in Room 250 of the center's Sajak Pavilion. Registration is required. 443-481- 4000.

Cancer survivors retreat:

Anne Arundel Medical Center will sponsor a cancer survivors retreat from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Wye Institute near Queenstown. The cost is $40 (scholarships are available). Registration is required. 443- 481-5316.

Dance fitness:

The county Department of Recreation and Parks, in cooperation with Bio Aerobics Inc., will offer dance fitness classes for teens and adults beginning next week. The session will run for seven weeks with two classes a week. Classes include "Cardio Fit" (high and low impact), "Tone and Firm" and "Step Interval." The cost is $54. 410-956-1084.
