Fashion forecast: Box of Rain

November 02, 2003|By Maria Blackburn | Maria Blackburn,Special to the Sun

Set in a Pikesville shopping center, next to a popular Asian restaurant and a bagel store, Box of Rain is decidedly suburban. Open the door, however, and you'll find lots of sophisticated, high-fashion clothes for men and women.

"I wanted to go after contemporary style designers people know by name, and I thought Pikesville would be a perfect fit," said owner Joe Uddeme. Uddeme, who owns the retro store The Other Side in Towson, looked everywhere for space, but ended up finding the spot in his own neighborhood. He says his store is inspired by such places as Anthropologie, South Moon Under and Urban Outfitters, but with his own flair.

The store, which opened in September, carries numerous styles of Ben Sherman for Men button-up shirts, which are simultaneously conservative and funky. We especially like the tailored Carnaby fit, $66. Also, look for men's jeans by Seven for All Mankind and Blue Cult denim.

For women, there are fine looking French Connection beaded and embroidered skirts ($138), layered T-shirts called Nudies by Sweet Pea, Michael Stars T-shirts, Ella Moss shirts and black-on-black pinstripe flares by Poleci ($190).

There's more on the way. In the coming weeks Uddeme says he's expecting silkscreen T-shirts by Jake's Dry Goods, lots of cashmere for women and clothing by Juicy Couture.

Box of Rain is located at Club Centre shopping center, 1496 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville. The phone is 410-415-6100.

Charitable lips

Red lipstick is so cool, so classic, and we love the names cosmetic companies lavish on tubes of the red stuff. Revlon had a great name in Cherries in the Snow. And we love Bloom Bombshell, too. BeneFit Cosmetics' new red lipstick, Shania Red, has a charming country twang. It bears the name of the pop / country diva Shania Twain, and proceeds from all sales benefit the American Heart Association.

Twain lost her grandmother to heart disease, the top killer of women in the nation. Shania Red ($14) is available through the end of the year at, in Sephora stores and at

It's simply non-scents

A scent can be good. Think Coco perfume, a crackling fire and a hot apple pie.

A scent can also be wretched. Think too much cheap cologne, a burning tire and hot egg salad.

The people at Lancome recognize that all scents are not universally loved, so they've just made their popular Dual Finish Versatile Powder Makeup available in a fragrance-free formula.

The powder is lightweight and gives good coverage. It can be used dry over moisturizer as a foundation or as a powder when puffed over a foundation.

It's available in eight shades and is designed for women with normal / combination or sensitive skin.

Dual Finish Versatile Powder Makeup costs $32 at such department stores as Hecht's and Macy's or at

Gilded lips

How much do you pay for your lip balm? $1.99 at the drug store? Or do you splurge for the $12 tube at the cosmetics counter?

At $62.50 per ounce, Jurlique's version is billed as the most expensive lip balm on the market. Devotees are said to include Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Pamela Anderson and Naomi Campbell.

It is so expensive, its manufacturer says, because its herbal ingredients are "grown on an organic farm in Australia, and hand-picked to ensure ultimate purity."

That's nice, but Chapstick, Blistex and plain old petroleum jelly do a nice job at smoothing chapped lips too, and the last time we checked they cost a fraction of the price.

Jurlique lip balm is available on its Web site:
