October 31, 2003

Lela Elizabeth Beard, a retired medical secretary and 40-year Towson resident, died of heart failure Wednesday at St. Joseph Medical Center. She was 77.

She was born and raised Lela Brewer in Hagerstown. After graduating from Hagerstown High School in 1943, she was employed as a secretary. From 1945 to 1949, she worked in Washington at what is now Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

In 1946, she married Elvin Ellsworth Beard, a Hendler Ice Cream salesman who died in 1960.

She sold real estate for O'Conor & Flynn from 1960 until 1976, when she became a medical secretary at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital. She retired in 1996.

Mrs. Beard enjoyed driving elderly neighbors on errands and to medical appointments. She was also an avid gardener and flower arranger.

"Her favorite flowers were roses, camellias and impatiens," said a daughter, Linda Susan Dusel of Towson.

She was a longtime communicant of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Boyce and Carrollton avenues in Ruxton, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Mrs. Beard also is survived by a son, Richard Lee Beard of Newport News, Va.; another daughter, Rebecca Jane Long of Glen Arm; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
