On October 12, 2003 HOWARD GWYNN COCKEY, 87, of pneumonia in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC. A native of My Lady's Manor, Monkton, MD, son of the late Joshua Hutchins Cockey Jr. and Mary Brown Patterson. He was a direct descendant of William Cockey who immigrated from England to Anne Arundel County in 1668. His great-great grandfather Joshua Frederick Cockey was associated with the founding of Cockeysville in Baltimore County. While stationed in Panama, during WWII he fashioned a number of beautiful brass candlesticks out of 40mm M25 shell casings and sent them to friends and family. He was often the life of the party for providing spur of the moment "tall tales" for the amusement of many of his friends and some of them actually believed him. After leaving the army, Mr. Cockey was a manager with Suburban Propane Gas Corp and worked in the Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia districts, retiring in 1979. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Metafawn Miller, who for almost five years saw to his comfort and well being while in the nursing home for physical and mental problems resulting from a fall. He is also survived by brothers Joshua Hutchins Cockey III of Monkton, MD and James Walter Cockey of Thatcher, AZ; sister Mary Margaretta Cockey Libitsky who preceded him in death in 1997 and several nieces and nephews. Graveside Services at a later date and time.
