Student reps to talk with Cummings, O'Rourke, the board

Student representatives from each of Howard County's 11 high schools will have an opportunity to speak with Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Superintendent John R. O'Rourke and members of the Board of Education at a forum on closing the achievement gap in the Howard County public school system.

The forum, sponsored by Cummings, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Jim Rouse Theatre at Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Road, Columbia.

Cummings proposed the forum in a letter to O'Rourke as a way to promote open and honest discussion between students and school administration to promote positive change.

Program on teen drinking to be held tomorrow

HC DrugFree, a grass-roots partnership of parents, schools and county agencies, will present the third in its 2003-2004 Speaker Series, "Alcohol and Teens in Howard County - Status Report," a program, for parents only, on underage drinking, fake identification, teen parties, driving under the influence of alcohol and parental liability.

The program will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at Long Reach High School.

A chance to help parents of special-needs children

Parent to Parent of Howard County matches parents of special-needs children with others for mutual support. The group trains parents interested in becoming mentors and matches them with parents requesting help.

Training will be offered from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Faulkner Ridge Center in Columbia.

Part 2 of workshop set on special-education law

The Family Advocacy and Parent Education Program, a nonprofit, will offer the second part of a two-part workshop on special-education law, with detailed reviews of federal regulations required by the Individuals with Disabilities Act, from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in Conference Room 4 of the Gateway Building, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Columbia.

A workshop on discipline and suspension, presented by Leslie Margolis of the Maryland Disability Law Center, will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.
