Volunteers needed to get skipjack ready for winter

The Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy and Volunteer Connection will hold a community service day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Tydings Park in Havre de Grace.

Volunteers will prepare the skipjack Martha Lewis for winter.

Lunch will be provided.

Library book sale runs Thursday through Oct. 26

The Bel Air Friends of the Harford County Public Library will sponsor a used-book sale Thursday through Oct. 26 at the Bel Air branch.

Fiction, nonfiction and children's books, as well as reference material, videotapes and CDs will be sold.

The Thursday sale, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., is a preview for members of the Friends. Anyone interested may join at the door.

Friday and Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Oct. 26 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Community garden plots to be discussed at meeting

The Harford County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a meeting about development of community garden plots in the Fallston/Benson area at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at Edgeley Grove Farm on Smith Lane in Benson.

The community garden would provide citizens and organizations with plots to plant their own gardens.

For a fee, participants would be provided with a small tilled piece of land to plant.

"The meeting will include discussion of the size and location of the community garden and the formation of a working committee," said Kathy Burley, a recreation specialist.

Holiday wreath sale benefits Special Olympics

Special Olympics-Harford County is conducting its sixth annual Christmas wreath sale to benefit the group's efforts to train and support the athletes.

The hand-tied balsam fir wreaths are $19 each. The wreath is 22 to 24 inches in diameter and comes with a red velvet weatherproof bow and natural pinecones.

All orders must be received by Nov. 12 for delivery during the first week of December.

Send checks payable to Harford County Department of Parks and Recreation, attention Mike Watkins, Special Olympics director, 702 N. Tollgate Road, Bel Air 21014. Orders should include the buyer's name, address and phone number.

When the wreaths arrive, buyers will be notified by phone.
