October 19, 2003|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A man was fatally shot by Baltimore County police officers yesterday in Woodlawn after he drew a handgun and fired at officers at the end of a brief car chase, police said.

About 8:45 a.m., officers on patrol on Windsor Mill Road checked the license plate number of a car being driven by Emanuel T. Williams, 22, of the 3200 block of Normount Ave. and discovered that it had been reported stolen, police said.

After a brief pursuit, the car ran off the road on Kernan Drive, just before Security Boulevard, police said. Williams left the car and fired an undetermined number of shots at the officers, according to police. The officers opened fire and hit Williams several times, police said. Williams was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he died.

Officers recovered a handgun from Williams after the shooting. A passenger in the car, whom police did not identify, was taken into custody.

Officials did not identify the officers involved.
