October 18, 2003

Rachel Mary Hemp, a retired teacher and longtime Westminster resident, died Sunday of pancreatic cancer at her home. She was 84.

Born Rachel McMahan in Federalsburg, she graduated from Federalsburg High School in 1936 and from the State Teachers College at Salisbury, now Salisbury University, four years later.

She began her 30-year teaching career in Frederick County, where she met Robert R. Hemp, her husband of 61 years. Hemp also taught at the elementary school level in Baltimore and Carroll counties, and in Norfolk, Va.

A resident of Westminster for 46 years, she was a member of Ascension Episcopal Church.

After her retirement in the mid-1970s, Mrs. Hemp enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her friends.

Services were held Thursday.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Sallie A. Hemp of Westminster; a son, Robert R. Hemp Jr. of Medford, N.J.; and two grandchildren.
