S. Carroll High School girls to tackle football for prom

The junior class of South Carroll High School will hold a powder-puff football game at 4 p.m. today in the school stadium to raise money for the junior/senior prom.

Junior and senior girls will play, while the boys will cheer them on.

Spectators are welcome. Admission is $2.

Ham, oyster supper is planned tomorrow

Lisbon United Methodist Church will hold a ham and oyster supper from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. tomorrow in the church hall, 15875 Frederick Road (Route 144) near Woodbine.

Food will be served family-style and carryouts will be available. The menu will include fried oysters, ham, green beans, corn, rolls, relishes, homemade coleslaw, potato salad and gelatin salads, plus a beverage.

The cost is $10 and $5 for ages 6 to 12.

Vintage Jazz Wine Festival scheduled at Linganore

Berrywine Plantations, Linganore Winecellars, will hold a Vintage Jazz Wine Festival from noon to 6 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.

The Todd Butler Band and the After Hours Band will perform modern jazz at noon and 3:30 p.m., respectively, both days.

More than 25 vendors will sell crafts. Breads, cheeses and other food will be available.

Winery tours and tastings of other vintages will be held. Admission is $10.

Winfield fire department to hold Sunday dinner

Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fried chicken, roast beef and ham dinner starting at noon until sold out Sunday at the fire hall, 1320 W. Old Liberty Road.

The menu will include vegetables, salads, rolls and beverage. A bake table will be available.

Tickets are $9.50; $4.50 for ages 6 to 12; and $10.50 for carryouts.

Autumn bonanza bingo slated at American Legion

American Legion Post 191 of Mount Airy will hold an autumn bonanza bingo Sunday at the post home.

Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. Dinner will be served at 2 p.m. and games begin at 3 p.m. Coffee and tea will be served all day.

Admission is $25 in advance or $30 at the door for dinner and a bingo package. Players must be age 16 or older and no alcohol is permitted. A nonsmoking room is available.

Mount Airy fire company to hold country breakfast

Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company will hold a country breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday at the Firemen's Activities Building.

The menu will include pancakes, eggs, sausage, toast, sausage gravy, chipped beef gravy, bacon, fried potatoes, biscuits, mixed fruit, hot apples and beverages.

The cost is $6; $3 for ages 6 to 10; and age 5 and younger eat for free.

Fire station open house, pumpkin decorating set

Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company will hold its annual open house and pumpkin contest from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at the firehouse.

Activities will include the Sprinkler Trailer, Safety Trailer, Thurmont Canine Search and Rescue Team, and child identification and fingerprinting.

The pumpkin contest is open to children in kindergarten through eighth grade. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded for each grade. Pumpkins and decorating materials will be supplied (no carving allowed).

Pumpkin decorating will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with judging at 3:15 p.m. The cost is $5 by tomorrow or $6 at the door.

Costumes are optional and also will be judged. Proceeds benefit the fire company's Fire Prevention and Life Safety Committee.

Library to offer stories, poetry, Internet programs

The Mount Airy library branch, 705 Ridge Ave., will offer:

Story Time for all ages (ages 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 11 a.m. today and 11 a.m. tomorrow on "Circus Fun," and 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday on "Smelly Stories."

"Slammin' @ Your Library - Teen Read Week Oct. 20-25" invites teens to write poetry to cover the teen bulletin board. Poems should be turned in to the information desk. Lines will be displayed from famous poems for teens to identify.
