Lothian man, 64, accused of shooting ex-girlfriend, 51

October 14, 2003

A Lothian man was charged Saturday with attempted murder in the weekend shooting of a former longtime girlfriend, Anne Arundel County police said.

John Marshall, 64, of the 4700 block of Sands Road was charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, use of a handgun in the commission of a felony and reckless endangerment after Shirley Ann Butler, 51, was shot, police said.

Police said Butler went to Marshall's home to pick up the couple's grandson and that an argument ensued. Anne Arundel police Capt. Thomas Rzepkowski said a firearm was brandished and that Butler ran out the door. While Marshall and Butler were outside, Rzepkowski said, six shots were fired, one of them striking Butler in the chest.

Butler was taken to Prince George's County Trauma Center, where she was in critical but stable condition yesterday. Marshall was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center for injuries he sustained during the shooting, then booked on the charges.

Marshall, who lived with Butler for 15 years, was taken into custody without incident, Rzepkowski said.
