Havre de Grace senior Shane West kicked a state-record 59-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of the Warriors' 34-14 home victory over Joppatowne on Friday at James R. Harris Memorial Field.

The kick eclipsed the previous record of 57 yards held by Perry Hall's Jason Bloom (1994) and John Carroll's Scott Collins (1997).

"The game was pretty much decided and we had lost some yards, but he wanted to kick it," said Warriors coach Johnny Brooks, whose No. 14 Warriors improved to 6-0. "It would have been good from 67 yards, to tell the truth. It was over the bar with something to spare."

West, also the team's quarterback, is 5-for-10 on field-goal tries. He also kicked a 37-yarder Friday to go along with a 1-yard scoring run and two extra points.
