October 11, 2003

Mattie L. Denmark, a former special-education teacher and gospel singer, died of kidney failure Tuesday at a hospital in Gainesville, Fla. She was 61.

Mattie L. Robinson was born in Baltimore and raised in Cherry Hill. She was a graduate of Frederick Douglass High School and earned an associate's degree in education from what is now Baltimore City Community College.

Mrs. Denmark, a former Mount Winans resident, taught special education in city public schools from 1974 to 1979.

She performed with gospel choirs at area churches and was known as "the madame of music in Baltimore," said daughter Shelly Gorham of Kitzingen, Germany. "She was a member and sang at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Mount Calvary Holy Temple and Mount Calvary Freewill Baptist Church."

Since 1981, Mrs. Denmark had lived in Sanford, Fla., where she was a member of United Church of the Redeemed.

Her marriage to Robert Denmark ended in divorce.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at New Hope United Methodist Church in Hawthorne, Fla.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a son, Micha Denmark, and another daughter, Pamela Denmark, both of Baltimore; and three grandchildren.
