American Legion Post 191 schedules an open house Sunday in Mount Airy

American Legion Gold Star Post 191 of Mount Airy will hold a family open house from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at 801 Prospect Road.

The community and especially veterans are welcome to meet members and find out about the post's programs.

The organization supports the community through high school scholarships, holiday memorial services, charities, weekly bingo and local sports teams.

The post also helps members with veterans' rights and activities. The post includes the American Legion, an auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion.

Door prizes will be awarded and snacks provided. Membership information will be available.

Berrywine tasting event to run through Monday

Berrywine Plantations, Linganore Winecellars, will hold an "Estate Red Wine and Cheese Tasting" from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow, noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

The vineyard's 2001 Linganore Estate Chambourcin, a Bordeaux-style red wine, will be introduced.

Cheese and crackers and the 2000 wines also will be served.

Tours of the winery will be offered at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Children's activities will be available.

Admission is free.

Mount Airy fire company to hold bingo night Oct. 17

Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company will hold a basket bingo fund-raiser Oct. 17 at the firemen's activities building on Twin Arch Road at Route 27.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and games will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door and include a dinner platter and three cards for each regular game.

The evening will include 24 games, four specials, a raffle and door prizes.

Extra cards will be available at the door.

Tables can be reserved for groups of six or more. Reservations are recommended.

Mount Airy library slates story times, book club

The Mount Airy library branch, 705 Ridge Ave., will offer:

Story Time for all ages (ages 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 11 a.m. today and 11 a.m. tomorrow on "Giants," and 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday on "Circus Fun."

Mount Airy Book Club for adults at 1 p.m. Wednesday to discuss The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.

Boy Scout completes landscaping for library

Alex Ehrensberger of Boy Scout Troop 1191 of Mount Airy recently completed work on his Eagle Scout project at the Mount Airy library branch and Senior Center.

He created a landscaping beautification project that was coordinated with the Carroll County Bureau of Facilities and officials from the library and senior center.

Work included removing dead plants and fallen branches, trimming bushes, edging, weeding, mulching and new plants.

For two days, Alex led family members, fellow Scouts, troop leaders and friends in the work. The group also returned to the site to clean up debris after Tropical Storm Isabel.

All materials for the project were donated by local businesses.
