Police, fire expo set for Sunday

October 10, 2003|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

Howard County police and fire departments are putting on their first expo Sunday in Columbia.

The Howard County Fire & Police Expo, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature demonstrations and displays, including police K-9 officers and their dogs, demonstrations by firefighters, exhibits of police and fire equipment and information on the effects of drunken driving. The Police Department's helicopter will make an appearance.

Events and activities for children will include face-painting, a Moon Bounce, and visits from McGruff the Crime Dog and Sparky the Fire Dog.

Lisa Myers, a police spokeswoman, said the fire department has held events in previous years. The Police Department marked its 50th anniversary last year with an expo. This year, she said, the two departments decided to combine events.

The expo will take place on the parking lot of Rouse Co. headquarters, near Lake Kittamaqundi, Myers said. Admission is free and vendors will sell food.
