Missing woman's body identified

October 09, 2003

The body found Saturday in a wooded area outside Annapolis has been identified as that of a local woman who had been missing since early last month, Anne Arundel County police said yesterday.

The state medical examiner is trying to determine how 52-year-old Nancy Clark Leonard died. Police have not labeled her death a homicide but are investigating it as one.

Leonard was last seen late on the afternoon of Sept. 4 as she walked from her home on Blossom Tree Court in Annapolis to a nearby convenience store to buy cigarettes, police said.

A backhoe operator uncovered her body, which was covered by brush and debris, in the woods on Old Mill Bottom Road, less than a mile from Leonard's home.

Leonard was last seen wearing a blue, hooded jacket, a light-green shirt with dark-green horizontal stripes, blue jeans and white tennis shoes. Clothes of that description were found on Leonard's body.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 410-222-3458.
