`Philadelphia Story' to kick off film series

Slayton House Theatre in Wilde Lake Village Center will start the 2003-2004 season of its "Marvelous Movies and More" film series with The Philadelphia Story, a 1940 film starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart, at 7:30 Oct. 17.

Dessert and coffee will be served after a short discussion. The cost is $7. Seating is limited.

The Mollycoddle, originally scheduled Sept. 19, will be shown at 3 p.m. Nov. 9.

Open-space cleanup set Oct. 25 in Wilde Lake

Wilde Lake residents are invited to help clean open-space areas, street gutters and storm drains as part of Columbia Cleans Day on Oct. 25.

Participants can pick up trash bags at Slayton House.

They will also receive juice, doughnuts and a free gift a 9 a.m.

Town Center yard sale is scheduled for Oct. 18

The Town Center Community Association will hold a village-wide yard sale from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 18 at Vantage Point Park in Columbia's Town Center.

The sale is free to sellers, but reservations are required.

Line dancing class slated at Bain center Oct. 20

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will offer a nine-week Urban Soul Line Dancing class for those ages 55 and older from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, starting Oct. 20 at Florence Bain Senior Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way.

The class will focus on syncopated patterns, basic footwork, timing and phrasing. Participants should have leather-soled shoes.

The cost is $22.

Lights on: The Bridges Over Wilde Lake will celebrate "Lights on AfterSchool," a national campaign to highlight the benefits of after-school programs and the resources needed to keep them going, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow at Wilde Lake High School. The nationwide event is sponsored locally by Bridges Over Wilde Lake, an after-school program for Bryant Woods and Running Brook elementaries and Wilde Lake middle and high schools. 410-313- 7185.

PTA meets: Longfellow Elementary School, 5470 Hesperus Drive, will hold its next PTA board meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Parents are invited to attend and bring suggestions for the organization's activities. Membership dues are $6 a membership; $10 for two. The PTA is raising money by collecting old newspapers for recycling. Drop off newspapers at the recycling bin on the parking lot to the right of the school. 410-313- 6879.

For parents: Wilde Lake Community Association is sponsoring workshops by Eva Skrenta of the Adler-Dreikurs Parenting Program. Topics include "Dealing with Anger: Your Own and Your Child's" on Oct. 18; "When Children Fight" on Nov. 22 and "Setting Limits Effectively" on Dec. 6. The Saturday seminars, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., cost $15 or $22 a couple. The sessions will be held at Slayton House except for Dec. 6, when the workshop will be in Bryant Woods Neighborhood Center. 410-730-3987.

Memories wanted: Swansfield Elementary School seeks stories, photos and other memorabilia for the school's celebration of its 30th anniversary this fall.
