Breast cancer lecture is Thursday at Arts Center

The Carroll County Arts Council is observing National Breast Cancer Awareness month with an exhibit and series of discussions relating to women's health.

A free "Lunch & Learn Lecture" on breast cancer awareness will be held at noon Thursday. Susan Rinehart of the Carroll County Health Department will discuss risk factors and effective detection, and answer questions.

The lecture is open to the public and participants are welcome to take a brown-bag lunch. Dessert and beverages will be provided.

Divorce, step-parenting talk set for Thursday

The Public Awareness Subcommittee of the Carroll County Mental Health and Addictions Advisory Committee is co-sponsoring a lecture series with the Carroll County Public Library.

The first lecture on divorce and step-parenting and will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Taneytown library branch, 10 Grand Drive, and Nov. 6 at the Mount Airy library branch, 705 Ridge Ave.

The workshop will address common issues families face as they attempt to create working relations with former spouses and secure environments for their children.

Michele Marion Barrattucci, co-owner of the Carroll County Training and Development Center, will present the workshop.

Parents and teens are welcome free of charge.

Bon Secours Spiritual Center lists programs

Bon Secours Spiritual Center in Marriottsville has announced fall programs.

The center is at 1525 Marriottsville Road. Registration is required for programs at 410- 442-1320. Available programs are:

"Ad Astra Retreat" with the Rev. David Carey from 5 p.m. Oct. 17 to 1 p.m. Oct. 19 for alcoholics in recovery. The cost is $185. This retreat will offer input, 12-step meetings, time for personal prayer and sharing of stories.

"Labyrinth Retreat Day" with Mary Ann Mulzet from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 23. Participants will explore the meaning and purpose of the labyrinth as a way of prayer, a walking meditation and a path representing a sacred journey to one's center and back. The cost is $40 and includes lunch.

"Icon Retreat Day" from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 23. Participants will learn about the ancient sacred art of icon writing. The history, symbolism and technique of iconography will be discussed with emphasis on spirituality. Participants can take an icon to pray with or use those provided. The cost is $45 and includes lunch.

Tai chi classes forming at Sykesville establishment

Three Treasures Health Services of Sykesville will offer classes in the Chinese internal healing art of tai chi.

Frances Gander, a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist, will teach the classes. Topics include qigong and internal energy cultivation, tai chi philosophy and principles, and applications.

Tai chi classes are from 6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Wednesdays starting Oct. 29 for six weeks. Early registration is urged as classes are limited to 12 students.

Classes cost $85 in advance or $90 at the door. A 20 percent discount is allowed for those from the same household.

Rape Crisis service plans hot line training sessions

The Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County will hold hot line crisis intervention training for people interested in helping sexual assault survivors in crisis.

The free 20-hour training prepares volunteers to staff a 24- hour telephone hot line and/or accompany survivors to the hospital, police station and/or court.

Topics will include acquaintance rape violence overview, principles of crisis counseling, rape trauma syndrome, counseling and communication skills, victim witness assistance program, prosecution of sexual offenses, sex offense legislation in Maryland, domestic violence, child sexual abuse, medical evidence collection and health issues and the criminal investigation process.

Classes will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Fridays, Nov. 7 and 14 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, Nov. 8 and 15 at 224 N. Center St., Westminster.

The cost is $75 for all or part of the series. Registration deadline is Oct. 31.

Merritt slates professional fitness conference Nov. 14

Merritt Athletic Club in Eldersburg will offer group fitness, aquatics, personal training and mind-body classes at its third annual Professional Fitness Conference Nov. 14-16.

This year, Merritt will hold two pre-certification days that will offer eight certifications and a third day of workshops from nationally known presenters. Early registration includes the early bird special and ensures class selection.
