Tutoring program at AACC earns training certification

Anne Arundel Community College Tutoring Program has won tutor training certification from the College Reading and Learning Association's prestigious International Tutor Certification Program.

AACC's program is qualified to issue CRLA certifications to individual tutors. Three association members from colleges across the country reviewed AACC materials and provided positive feedback.

Six students are in training and one has completed certification requirements at the college.

St. John's College fills four positions

St. John's College in Annapolis recently filled four positions.

Community Programs Assistant Catharine Hatch coordinates activities such as continuing education and the fine arts program, the Great Kite Fly and Saturday seminars. Hatch holds a bachelor of arts degree from Southern Illinois University and previously worked for Wal-Mart, Macy's and Sears.

Joy Kaplan, director of student services, oversees student housing, activities and attendance, and addresses students' concerns. A 1987 graduate of St. John's College, Santa Fe, Kaplan holds a bachelor of science degree in math and science education and a master's degree in curriculum, instruction and multicultural teacher education from the University of New Mexico. Her previous work experience includes educational consulting and teaching literature, math science, drama and English as a second language.

Senior Network Administrator Seth Price is responsible for the administration of college network systems, overseeing information technology services and staff. He previously worked as chief system administrator/system engineer for the Marine Air Control Squadron-1, Tactical Air Operations Center. He is certified as a Microsoft professional, Microsoft systems engineer and Microsoft systems administrator.

Bernadette Zorio is a student counselor. She is also in private practice as a nurse psychotherapist in Annapolis and co-facilitator of HAVEN (HIV and AIDS Enrichment Network). She holds a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Duquesne University, a master's degree in nursing from the Catholic University of America, is certified as a clinical nurse specialist in adult psychiatric mental health nursing, and has participated in developmental family system therapy, the Elizabeth Kubler Ross Certification Program and naturopathy.
