Mrs. Ellen B. Runkles, 94 of Mt. Airy, MD. died Wednesday, Oct 1, 2003 at the Carrol County General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Ernest E. Runkles who died in 1979. Born August 22, 1909 in Stewartstown, Penna., she was the daughter of the late Charles Bayles Bartol and Edna Wilson Bartol Stewart. She was a 1929 graduate of the Maryland State Normal School in Towson and taught first grade in Harford County for five years before her marriage. She was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Frederick County Farm Bureau and the 85+ club of Mt. Airy. Surviving are daughter and sons-in-law Ruth Ann and George Brown of Westminster and Kay and Robert Hoffman of Williamsport; sons and daughters-in-law Charles and Linda Runkles of Baltimore and James and Sharon Runkles of North Bonneville, WA. and daughter-in-law Nancy Runkles of Perryville; grandchildren Laura Brown, Cleveland Bradley Brown, Jesse and Kara Hoffman, Cheryl Runkles Hurbon, Catherine Runkles See, Patricia Runkles Pearson, Michael and Alex Runkles, Donald Runkles and Jodie Runkles Weaver; six great grandchildren; sister-in-law Mildred Stewart and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Grace, a son Joseph W. Runkles, a sister Grace Bartol and half-brothers James and Edward Stewart. Friends may call at the Stauffer Funeral home, 7 East Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy, MD on Sunday, October 5, 2003 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m and on Monday, Oct 6, at the Prospect United Methodist Church, 5923 Woodville Road, Mt. Airy, MD from 10:00 to 10:45 with funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Prospect United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
