Weekend festival set in downtown Mount Airy

The Mount Airy Downtown Business Association will celebrate the season with its 19th annual fall festival from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday along downtown Main Street.

Arts and crafts vendors, food, shopping, children's activities (rock climb, slide, pony rides), hayrides (food donation requested for Mount Airy NET), a quilt show, train garden display (Sunday only), entertainment and eating contests will be featured. Scarecrow making will be available for $5 and pumpkin painting for $1.

The Mount Airy Historical Society museum and Main Street shops will be open. Some shops will have exhibits and programs for visitors.

Entertainment will be in front of F&M Bank, Center and Main streets and the old firehouse stage, and will include:

Tomorrow: 11 a.m., doughnut eating contest, Steel Roots band; 11:30 a.m., karate demonstration; 12:30 p.m., Michael Cavaliere; 1 p.m., pie-eating contest; 1 p.m., Shawn Heming and Friends music; 1:30 p.m., Mount Airy Performing Arts Center; 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., Vintage band; 2 p.m., Skyview Gymnastics; 2:45 p.m., New Dimensions band; 3 p.m., Scott Barrett.

Sunday: 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., & the Boys; 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., the Caballeros; 1:30 p.m., Mount Airy Performing Arts Center and Mount Airy Players; 2 p.m., spaghetti-eating contest; 2 p.m., Skyview Gymnastics; 2:30 p.m., Steve Flynn's Sinatra impersonations; 3 p.m., Sykesville Raiders cheerleaders.

Winery to demonstrate how red wine is made

Berrywine Plantations, Linganore Winecellars, will hold a Red Grape Escape Wine Event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The process for making wine from red grapes will be shown and fermenting red grape juice can be sampled.

The winery will offer tours and tastings. A petting zoo and pony rides will be available for children.

Admission is free.

Volunteer fire company to offer family-style dinner

The Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company will hold a family-style turkey, oyster and ham dinner from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the firemen's activities building.

The cost is $11 for adults; $5 for children age 12 and younger; and free for younger than age 5. Carryouts are $1 extra.

The activities building is on the carnival grounds at Twin Arch Road and Route 27.

Church yard sale slated tomorrow in Berrett

Brandenburg United Methodist Church will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the church.

Bingo bonanza planned at American Legion Post

American Legion Post 191 of Mount Airy will hold an autumn bonanza bingo Oct. 19 at the post home.

Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. at the back table. Dinner will be served at 2 p.m. and include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, green beans, coleslaw, roll and dessert. Coffee and tea will be served all day.

Bingo will begin at 3 p.m. with four early bird games, followed by 30 other paper games.

Admission is $25 in advance or $30 at the door for dinner and a bingo package of nine cards on 20 regular games, six cards on five special games and three cards for two $599 jackpot games. Extra cards will be available for purchase.

Players must be age 16 or older and no alcohol will be permitted. A nonsmoking room will be available.

Library branch to offer book club, kids' programs

The Mount Airy library branch, 705 Ridge Ave., will offer:

Story Time for all ages (age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 11 a.m. today and 11 a.m. tomorrow on "Proud of Me," and 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday on "Giants."

"All Aboard the Alphabet Train: Cheerful C" for all ages at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The program celebrates the alphabet in stories and songs.

Mount Airy Book Club for adults at 1 p.m. Oct. 15 to discuss The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.
