Afghan native to speak Wednesday, show slides of trip

United Methodist Women and the Missions Outreach Commission of Calvary United Methodist Church will sponsor a family night at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the fellowship hall, 301 Rowe Blvd. in Annapolis.

A chicken dinner will be served at 6 p.m., followed by a presentation by Fahima Vargetts, an Afghan native who will speak and show slides of her most recent trip to Afghanistan.

As an adviser to Women for Afghan Women, Vargetts makes frequent trips to her native land to deliver supplies. She supports schools for children and vocational schools that teach women skills such as weaving.

Participants will have an opportunity to see Afghan handcrafts and learn about life in Afghanistan. Handcrafts, jewelry and rugs will be sold, with proceeds going to the Afghan Women's Fund. Reservations should be made by Sunday. Information: 410-280-3264.

Jenkins Memorial getting a new assistant pastor

Jenkins Memorial Church will welcome its new assistant pastor, the Rev. Milton Zahn, on Sunday with an ordination ceremony. The ceremony will be part of the 11 a.m. worship service. The church is at 133 Riviera Drive in Riviera Beach.

A dinner and fellowship celebration welcoming Zahn and his wife, Jeanne, to the church will follow the ceremony. Zahn has many years of experience as a teacher and an extensive background in music. He has been choir director at many churches since 1983. In 1996, he started WitnesSing, an independent evangelical Christian ministry that presents God's word in message and song. Unitarian church to present two concerts of love songs

Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis will sponsor a concert, "Love Songs Through the Ages," at 8 p.m. tomorrow and at 2 p.m. Sunday The church is at 333 Dubois Road, off Bestgate Road in Annapolis.

Baritone Joseph Specter, tenor Vincent Tulli Chambers and soprano Kathleen Kinhan will perform music from La Boheme and Rigoletto, and musical comedy selections from Gilbert and Sullivan and Cole Porter. The singers will be joined by pianist Martin Bejerano and the church choir. A meet-the-artists reception will follow the concert.

Donations of $15 in advance and $20 at the door are requested.

Workshop: Come Just as You Are Bible Fellowship Crusade Ministry will sponsor a Therapeutic Workshop for home caretakers from 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow at the Holiday Inn, 6323 Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie. 410-265-1754.

Blood drive: Glen Burnie Seventh-day Adventist Church, 508 Aquahart Road, will sponsor a blood drive, a 1-mile fun run and walk, 5- and 10-kilometer runs, and a kids' run at 9 a.m. Sunday. The blood drive ends at 3 p.m. Proceeds from T-shirt sales and donations will help feed the homeless. The cost is $18 in advance and $23 race day. Dinner: Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will sponsor the annual sour beef, dumplings and roast beef dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 11 in the social hall at St. John Lutheran Church, 226 Washburn Ave. at Third St. in Brooklyn. Broadway excursion: St. Philip's Church Theater Group's will make its annual trip to Broadways Oct. 18 to see the musical 42nd Street. The bus leaves at 7 a.m. from St. Philip's Church, 730 Bestgate Road in Annapolis, and returns at 11 p.m. The cost is $135, which includes a continental breakfast, a boxed lunch, snacks, movies en route, the performance and transportation.
