Scholarship fund established in honor of Klocko

Friends and family of former Anne Arundel County Councilman John J. Klocko III announced yesterday that they have established a scholarship fund in his name. Klocko died a year ago in a car accident in Utah.

Three scholarships will be awarded each spring to high school seniors in the 7th District, the area of western and southern Anne Arundel formerly represented by Klocko.

The group will begin a fund-raising campaign from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Davidsonville Ruritan Club.

Homeowners to get help for Isabel-related damage

Anne Arundel County is offering technical and financial assistance to income-eligible homeowners who are trying to repair damage caused by Tropical Storm Isabel.

The program will provide damage assessment, insurance counseling, contractor recommendations and financial aid to individuals and families who earn household incomes that are less than 80 percent of the area median income. Families of four with a combined income less than about $54,000 and single homeowners who make less than about $37,000 are eligible, county officials said.

The program will be administered by the nonprofit Arundel Community Development Services Inc. Information: 410-222- 7600, Ext. 136.

Schools get federal grant for emergency response

The Anne Arundel County school system has received a $489,000 federal grant to improve its ability to respond to emergencies.

School officials said they plan to use the grant from the Department of Education to install security cameras at several high schools, purchase emergency equipment and supplies and establish a "save-a-friend" student hot line.

"It's going to allow us to get a lot of things that we just didn't have the money for," said J. Mark Black, supervisor of school security.
