12 months of rain rival wettest year

September 30, 2003

The storms of September dropped almost 7 1/2 inches of rain on Baltimore, capping a 12-month cycle of soggy weather that rivals the wettest calendar years in the city's history.

Baltimore-Washington International Airport has received 62 inches of precipitation since October last year. That's about normal for Mobile, Ala., but nearly 50 percent higher than the 42-inch norm for BWI in a calendar year.

If that much had been measured from January to December, the weather service would rank it officially as the second-wettest year in 132 years of recordkeeping for Baltimore. Only 1889 brought more - 62.3 inches.
