Race organizers pick up the pace as summer runs out

If your summer came and went before you could get in a good workout, then hit the road.

This fall, the Baltimore region will play host to a variety of running and walking events, from family nature walks to full marathons. So whatever your skill level or interest, there's got to be a race that will meet your fitness needs. And with a good portion of the proceeds going to charity, you'll get your karma right, too.

Check out this list of coming events:

Saturday

The inaugural Kingsville Country Roads 10K will take place Saturday. The course, which begins on Jericho Road and winds through the Baltimore County countryside, will have participants jogging across one of the only covered bridges in the state. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m. Race day registration is $25.

Take Bel Air Road (U.S. 1) to Jerusalem Road. Bear right and follow for 2 miles to Gunpowder River and Jerusalem Mills. Follow signs for parking. For more information, call 410-593-9662 or visit www.triath.com.

Family and friends of the late Diane Geppi-Aikens have organized a 5K run in her name. The Saturday race, which begins at 8:30 a.m. on Loyola College's Curley Field, will honor the woman who coached women's lacrosse at the college while fighting terminal brain cancer. Same-day registration is $30, and proceeds will go to a trust fund that has been set up for the Aikens children. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

Sunday

Tackle a 20-miler, run a relay or take on a course alone Sunday at Land America's Race at the Ridge. The event offers three different races, though all will start and finish at Oregon Ridge Park. The 20-mile race and two-person relay will start at 8 a.m., and the 5K individual run will begin at 8:30 a.m. Proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Maryland. Event fees range from $18 to $60.

Run to benefit children with Down syndrome Sunday at the Kennedy Krieger Institute's 17th Annual Airport Run. Beginning at the BWI Airport's Midfield Cargo Complex, the 4-mile run takes participants on a mostly flat course through the airport, a Northrop Grumman site and the B&A Trail. Race-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the race starts at 8:45 a.m. A 2-mile family walk will begin at 8:50 a.m. The Midfield Cargo Complex is at Mathison Way, Linthicum.

Spend quality time with your pet Sunday at the Animal Welfare Society of Howard County's 2nd Annual Rover Run. The event will be held at the Schooley Mill Park in Highland from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. All dogs must be leashed and well-behaved. The entry fees range from $25 to $100, and proceeds will help to cover sheltering costs at the center.

Oct. 4

The Komen Maryland Race for the Cure will take place Oct. 4. The 5K run/walk, a part of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure, will begin at 8:45 a.m. at M&T Bank Stadium. A 1-mile fun walk will begin at 8 a.m. Same-day registration begins at 6 a.m. Registration for the event is $25 before race day and $35 on race day.

Oct. 5

Get out to enjoy crisp air and the beauty of fall Oct. 5 at Harford Community College's 5K Cross Campus Eco-Run. The event, which also features a family nature walk and youth fun run, will begin at 11 a.m. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. in the college's Susquehanna Center. The entry fee is $10 for the 5K and family walk and $1 for the youth fun run.

Oct. 11

Move your feet Oct. 11 at the Friends of Villa Maria's 3rd Annual Walk/Run for Kids' Sake. The 5K run and 1-mile walk will benefit the Villa Maria Continuum's mental-health and special-education programs. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and will start and finish at Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville. The walk, which also takes place in the park, will begin at 9:15 a.m. Same-day registration and packet pickup begins at 7:45 a.m. The entry fee is $20 prior to Oct. 9 and $25 on race day.
