Electrical problem causes spill of sewage into Patuxent

September 24, 2003|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A burned electrical contact switch at the North Laurel Pump Station caused a failure that allowed 30,000 gallons of raw sewage to flow into the Patuxent River early yesterday, according to Howard County officials.

The failure, which occurred at 6 a.m., was repaired by county workers within 30 minutes after an alarm sounded, said Robert M. Beringer, chief of the county's Bureau of Utilities.

The station, at 10150 Washington Blvd., is about to be rebuilt, Beringer said.
