Finksburg planning council to meet

The Finksburg Planning Area Council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sandy Mount United Methodist Church.

The agenda will include the final report from the Maryland Department of the Environment on the source of water contamination on Suffolk Road; the proposed Finksburg library; volunteers for a proposed county committee on scenic issues; and a potential new scorecard for the commissioners.

All Finksburg-area residents and business owners and guests are welcome.

Church ministry to sponsor community youth event

TORCH Youth Ministries of Westminster Church of God will hold a community youth event from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Winters Mill High School.

Designed specifically for teen-agers, TORCH will feature a teen car and truck show, an 8-foot slam dunk competition, a teen talent show, live band, break-dancing and free-styling hour, cow milking, a golf driving range, free-throw shooting contest and quarterback toss.

Free food will be available to the first 400 teens to arrive. T-shirts will be sold. Raffles and giveaways will be featured.

Registration for the car and truck show will begin at 1 p.m. and is sponsored by Westminster Speed and Sound.

Westminster Ministerium plans meeting tomorrow

The Westminster Ministerium will meet at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Westminster Church of the Brethren.

The group recently elected officers and this meeting will include time to get acquainted with new clergy.

Officers are: Mark Wadel, president, Lighthouse Worship Center; David Highfield, vice president, Westminster United Methodist Church; Scott Duffey, secretary, Westminster Church of the Brethren; and Larry Steen, treasurer, Westminster Baptist Church.

All Christian ministers and those who work in specialized Christian ministries are welcome. The Church of the Brethren is at Bond Street and Park Place.

Library branch to offer sign language for teens

Westminster branch library, 50 E. Main St., will offer:

Family Story Time for all ages (age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 7 p.m. tomorrow, 1 p.m. Wednesday, 1 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. Saturday on "Woolly Sheep."

"What's Your Sign?" for teens at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Kathy MacMillan, library/media specialist at the Maryland School for the Deaf in Columbia, will discuss the history of sign language, teach some simple signs and play sign language games.

"Midnight Madness Ghost Walk" for teens and adults at 7 p.m. Friday. Library staff will show a slide presentation of county ghost stories and legends, then lead a walk to reputedly haunted sites in the downtown area. Ages 10 to 14 must be with an adult. Registration is required.

Book Discussion Club for adults at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 1 to discuss Charleston by John Jakes.

"Stampin' Candles" for teens and adults at 7 p.m. Oct. 2. Participants will learn to use rubber stamps to design a candle to take home. Registration is required.

"Let's Talk Classics" for teens and adults at 7 p.m. Oct. 9. The monthly program focuses on classic literature and children's literature. This month's selection is The Chosen by Chaim Potok.

Student enrolls in college's fashion design program

Tesha Stimmel of Westminster has enrolled in Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts as a fashion design major.

She is among 2,800 new first-year and transfer students entering the New York university this fall.

Common Council: Westminster Common Council will meet at 7 p.m. today at City Hall, 1838 Emerald Hill Lane. 410-848-9000.

Around town

Westminster Elementary: The PTO will hold a pep rally for the school's fifth annual fun run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Pizza Hut in 140 Village Shopping Center. Cheering, crafts and face painting will be featured. The fun run will be held Friday at the school as a way to promote physical fitness. Prizes will be awarded.
