Elsie Pumphrey, 87, homemaker, secretary

Elsie Pumphrey, a homemaker, community volunteer and former college secretary, died Saturday of congestive heart failure at her Severna Park home. She was 87.

Born Elsie Keefer in Frederick and raised on her family's Phleeger Farm at Braddock in Frederick County, she was a 1934 graduate of Frederick High School. She attended Strayer Business College.

In 1940, she married John Henry Pumphrey. The couple lived in Linthicum Heights and later moved to North Severna Park. Her husband, a retired DuPont engineer, died last year.

In the early 1960s, she was a volunteer in the health room of Severna Park High School. From 1968 to 1976, she was secretary to the dean of students at Anne Arundel Community College.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Barranco & Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, Ritchie Highway and Robinson Road.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Kay Pumphrey of Severna Park and Carol Sewell of Gainesville, Fla.; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.
