Catherine Lazzaro Poteet, 85, state employee

Catherine Lazzaro Poteet, a former state employee, died in her sleep Monday at York County Nursing Home in York, Pa. She was 85.

Born Catherine Lazzaro in Baltimore and raised on Lorraine Avenue, she was a 1936 graduate of Western High School and studied business and psychology at the University of Baltimore.

Mrs. Poteet worked for the old Maryland State Employment Service before her 1941 marriage to William A. Poteet, a contractor and builder.

She was an administrator in her husband's business from the late 1940s until taking a job with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland in 1963. She was an administrative assistant for three years with the Maryland Commission on Human Relations before retiring in 1969.

Mrs. Poteet lived for many years in a home her husband built in Carney, before moving to Walker Mews Apartments in the Lake-Walker neighborhood. Since 1994, she had resided in the nursing home and suffered from dementia. Her husband died in 1964.

She was a communicant of St. Ursula Roman Catholic Church in Parkville.

Services are private.

Survivors include two daughters, Andrea P. Cucina of Nottingham and Susanne P. Mummert of Hanover, Pa.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
